Philosophy of Guidance

The guidance practices of the preschool reflect our philosophy that each child is a unique individual with varying strengths and needs. It is, therefore our belief that children should be treated with respect and consideration. It is our role to assist children in developing self-control, self-confidence and self-discipline and sensitivity in their interactions with others.

Our program follows the guidelines in the handbook "Guidance and Discipline With Young Children" developed by the Provincial Child Care Facilities Licensing Board. Out guidance methods are based on a positive, non-punitive approach.

Positive behavior is encouraged within the classroom environment by including appropriate play materials, space and support. Children are guided with developmentally appropriate limits that are clear and consistent. These limits are related to the health, safety and protection of each child, others and the environment. Strategies used to intervention include: redirecting, modeling problem solving skills, offering appropriate choices and natural and logical consequences.

As licensed educators, it is our role to identify and report neglect and child abuse. The staff of the Child Development Centre is legally responsible to report any incidences of suspected or disclosed abuse to the Ministry of Children and Family Development and/or Community Care Licensing.
